Quest of Nine

The Book

Area of a rectangle

Area is measured in square units e.g. square centimetres ( cm2 ), square kilometres ( km2 ), square miles etc.

Select a rectangle from the drop down list and click on the squares in the grid to make rectangles with that area.

Click on squares on the grid to make filled rectangles with this area

There is more than one answer for each.

Check it

After trying a few rectangles in the grid you will see that the area is always the length times the width of the rectangle,

area = length x width

e.g. 4 x 6 = 24

and it's the same for any units, so

4cm x 6cm = 24cm2
4km x 6km = 24km2
4 yards x 6 yards = 24 square yards
4 miles x 6 miles = 24 square miles

So, to find the area of the whole grid you could count all the squares, but it is quicker to use a calculator to find out that 15 x 15 = 225 , i.e. the area is 225 squares.

Choose a rectangle and use the calculator to work out its area.

Area of a parallelogram

A parallelogram is a four-sided shape (quadrilateral) with opposite sides the same length.

You can think of it as a rectangle that has been pushed out of shape. push
