Area of a rectangle

Area is measured in square units e.g. square centimetres ( cm² ), square kilometres ( km² ), square miles etc.

After trying a few rectangles in the grid you will see that the area is always the length times the width of the rectangle,

area = length x width

e.g. 4 x 6 = 24

and it's the same for any units, so

4cm x 6cm = 24cm²
4km x 6km = 24km²
4 yards x 6 yards = 24 square yards
4 miles x 6 miles = 24 square miles

So, to find the area of the whole grid you could count all the squares, but it is quicker to use a calculator to find out that 15 x 15 = 225 , i.e. the area is 225 squares.

Area of a parallelogram
